On June 22, ten members of the youth parliament (JuPa) took part in an all-day rhetoric course. The tutor, Ms. Monika Scherbaum, herself spent many years in local politics. She gave the JuPa tips on communicating confidently and respectfully. The course covered quick and adequate introductions, making small talk, and how to be assertive when discussing delicate issues such as racism.
The participants identified different approaches to argumentation, which they practiced in small groups. Further topics included conversation techniques and breathing tips for long speeches. The youngsters also learned about the power of body language, how to interpret non-verbal signals, and how to use these to their advantage. This rhetoric seminar was supported by the federal "Demokratie Leben" (Bringing Democracy to Life) program.
